Luxembourg is the perfect destination for a long weekend. Located in the center of Europe, it is very easily accessible from its neighboring countries or even by flying directly to it.
I have now been to Luxembourg twice and despite it being a small country, it offers the perfect mix between a city trip and a nature trip. Whether you are looking for a more cultural trip or a more active one, Luxembourg will not disappoint you. Here are some examples of the many activities that you can do:
Visit Luxembourg city with its many cultural and historical sites.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO LUXEMBOURG
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN TRAVELING TO LUXEMBOURG?
Here are the main things you should know before traveling to Luxembourg.
Currency: The local currency in Luxembourg is the Euro ().
Language: Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German. However, almost everyone speaks English as well so you will not have any problem communicating with people.
Electricity: Luxembourg uses the same type of electrical plugs as most European countries (type C and type F).
Safety: Luxembourg is a safe country. It can be considered safer than many European capitals.
HOW TO GET TO LUXEMBOURG?
Luxembourg is located in the center of Europe, making it very easily accessible by car, train, or plane.
By plane: Despite it being a small country, Luxembourg has an international airport. It is possible to get a direct flight to Luxembourg from many European cities. I always use Kiwi to check the best flight deals.
By train: Another option is to fly to a nearby city such as Brussels or Frankfurt, and get a train to Luxembourg from there.
By car: If you leave in one of the neighboring countries to Luxembourg, the best way to get there is by driving your car.
HOW TO MOVE AROUND LUXEMBOURG?
This will depend on whether you are only planning to visit Luxembourg city or you will also visit some other parts of this beautiful country.
If you are only visiting Luxembourg city, then the best way is to walk. Luxembourg is not a very big city so most places you will visit are within walking distance. It will also be a fantastic workout, with visiting the upper and lower city.
If you plan on getting outside the city as we did, then I recommend that you rent a car (if you have not arrived in Luxembourg with your private car). This will give you complete flexibility to visit the country on your own schedule.
Tip: If you don’t feel like driving, did you know Luxembourg is the first country in the world to offer completely free public transport? You can read all about it at this link.
WHERE TO STAY IN LUXEMBOURG?
For a long weekend in Luxembourg, the best thing is to sleep in Luxembourg city and move around from there. This will allow you to explore the country without too much driving time and have plenty of places to have dinner in the evening.
Domus Hotel
Domus Hotel has a primer location in central Luxembourg. This hotel has modern and comfortable rooms that even have a kitchenet in case you want to safe some money and cook your own meals.
My trip to Luxembourg was during a long weekend in August, from Friday evening after work to Monday evening. However, it can be done at any moment of the week and in any season.
DAY 1 - DRIVE TO LUXEMBOURG
The first day of the trip was only a few hours in the evening to drive from Belgium to Luxembourg. We left around 6 pm after finishing work and packed some sandwiches to have dinner along the way.
DAY 2 - HIKING THE MULLERTHAL TRAIL
On this day we drove to “La Petite Suisse Luxembourgoise” or Luxembourg’s Little Switzerlandand spent the day hiking on the Mullerthal Trail.
The Mullerthal Trail is a 112km trail that goes along all the natural landmarks of the Mullerthal region. It can be divided into 3 different routes of around 30 km and multiple smaller hikes.
We chose to follow the W7 hike, which is a relatively new trail that starts and ends in Mullerthal and takes you along some of the region’s typical rock formations and small streams. This hike also includes walking by the beautiful Kallektuffel and Schéissenëmpel waterfall. The Kallektuffel is a natural pool that slowly flows over a calcareous rock. Schéissenëmpel waterfall is a three-flow waterfall where you can take a refreshing dip in the summer months!
We spent the second full day of our trip visiting the beautiful Luxembourg City, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. We focused our day on visiting the two main districts in which the most tourist sites are located, “Ville Haute” (High city) and “Ville Base” (Low city).
Some of the highlights we visited are:
The Bock Casemates
The Cathedrale de Notre Dame
The Gëlle Fra
The Grand Ducal Palace
Parc Petrusse
TIP: Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! The city is located on a plateau and it’s surrounded by a valley, so you will be doing a lot of walking up and down hills.
On the last day of our trip, we decided to go back to the Mullerthal region to do a short hike in the morning. We chose to do the B2 local hiking trailand it turned out to be the highlight of our trip! This hike was not only beautiful but it was a lot of fun too!
Along this hike, you will be able to walk along the Jean Siebertz narrow canyons, explore the Raiberhiel cave, and admire the beautiful viewpoints of Ruetsbechplateau. This hike is only 6 km long but you will need around 4 hours to complete it as it has plenty of detours to do while you explore the different caves and paths! It was the perfect way to end our long weekend in Luxembourg.
