How to get there?

Luxembourg is located in the center of Europe, making it very easily accessible by car, train, or plane.

  • By plane: Despite it being a small country, Luxembourg has an international airport. It is possible to get a direct flight to Luxembourg from many European cities. I always use Skyscanner to check the best flight deals.
  • By trainAnother option is to fly to a nearby city such as Brussels or Frankfurt, and get a train to Luxembourg from there.
  • By car: If you live in one of the neighboring countries to Luxembourg, the best way to get there is by driving your car.

Moving around Luxembourg City

The best way to move around Luxembourg city is by walking. Luxembourg is not a very big city so most places you will visit are within walking distance. It will also be a fantastic workout, with visiting the upper and lower city. Just remember to bring comfortable shoes!

Tip: If at some point you get tired and don’t feel like walking anymore, then I recommend you use the buses. Luxembourg is the first country in the world to offer completely free public transport. You can read all about it at this link.

Gëlle Fra or the Golden Lady or the Monument of Remembrance is a small golden statue of a woman on the top of an obelisk. This monument is located at Place de la Constitution and it was built in honor of the soldiers that died in World War I.

In 1940, this monument was completely destroyed by the Nazis. The obelisk was broken down into pieces but the statue was lost during the demolition.

It was only in 1984 that the monument was restored to its original appearance after the statue was found again.

Today, this monument symbolizes the freedom and resistance of the Luxembourgish people.

5. Casemates Du Bock & Petrusse Casemates

These were a network of 23km long underground tunnels and galleries built into the rocks underneath the city. They were first built by the Spanish in 1644 and were enlarged by the French and Austrian at later periods in time. These subterranean passages were mainly used for defensive purposes.

In 1867, many tunnels were dismantled. However, around 17km of them were left in good enough condition, and in 1993, they were open for the public to visit them. In 1994, UNESCO listed Luxembourg’s fortifications (including the casemates) as World Heritage.

Important: Casemates du Bock and Petrusse have been temporarily closed for approximately 3 years due to renovation works. There is still no exact date on when they will open again.
