GETTING TO FREIBURG
Getting to Freiburg is easy. The city is very well connected and easy to reach. You have different options to choose from.
In my opinion, if you are only doing a city trip to Freiburg, I would opt for the plane + train combination (or just train if you don’t live to far away from the city). However, if you plan on doing a road trip around the Black Forest, then you will need to rent a car.
BY PLANE
Freiburg doesn’t have its own major airport but you have several choices nearby. The closest airport is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (approximately 70 kilometers away from the city). Frankfurt and Zurich airpots are also good alternatives but a bit further from the city.
Once at the Airport, you will have to either rent a car or hop on a train to make it into the city.
The most relaxing option! Freiburg has a big central station with direct high-speed ICE connections from major German cities like Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. From Frankfurt Airport it’s just about 2 hours. Perfect for skipping the stress of driving.
BY CAR
If you love road trips and the freedom that you get from driving a car, the A5 autobahn runs right past Freiburg. All you have to do is rent a car at the airport and get driving!
The answer to this question is always difficult because it really depends on what you want to do and see. If you’re just interested in visiting the city’s main attractions, I would say a day is more than enough to visit Freiburg. However, if you want to do everything that is listed on this blog as well as one or two hikes in the Black Forest, I would recommend 2 or even 3 days.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT FREIBURG?
I would say that Freiburg has something special in every season. It all depends on what you want to do
The best time to visit Freiburg im Breisgau is either spring or autumn. In these seasons, you will most likely get pleasant weather and it is not super crowded. Since it is a student city, there are many festivals in the spring.
The summer months are also quite lively but it will get busier and accommodation is a bit more pricey. During the winter, you can enjoy the cozy atmosphere with the beautiful German Christmas markets.
THE 10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN FREIBURG, GERMANY
1. WANDER THROUGH FREIBURG'S HISTORIC OLD TOWN (ALTSTADT)
The beating heart of Freiburg is its Altstadt, a maze of cobbled streets, colorful houses, and lively squares. As you stroll, notice the Bächle, small water channels that run through the streets. Just be careful no to accidentally step in one. It is said that if you do, you are destined to marry a local!
The central square, Münsterplatz, is surrounded by impressive historic buildings and buzzing cafés, making it the perfect place to start your visit to the city.
While exploring the Altstad, make sure to also check out the beautiful old city doors like Schwabentor and Martinstor, which still preserve the middle ages architectural style.
2. visit the freiburg minster and climb its tower
Dominating the skyline of the city, the Freiburg Minster (in German Münster) is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Germany. Inside, you’ll find stunning stained-glass windows and sculptures.
However, the real highlight is climbing the 333 steps up the tower. The panoramic view over the city and the Black Forest beyond is worth every bit of effort.

Price. Entry to the church is free but you will have to pay 5 euros if you want to climb its tower.
Opening hours. The minster is open Monday to Saturday between 9:00 and 16:45. On Sundays, it opens between 13:30 and 16:45.
3. SHOP AND SNACK AT THE FREIBURG'S FARMER'S MARKET
Every day except Sunday, Münsterplatz transforms into a lively market where locals shop for fresh produce, flowers, and regional specialties. Don’t miss the chance to try a Freiburger Lange Rote, a long red saussage that’s a local favorite, or pick up artisanal cheeses and breads for a picnic.

If you’re a nature lover like me, then Schlossberg Hill is an absolute must. This small forest is located just a short walk from the old town. Here you’ll find many trails that lead you to viewpoints overlooking the city. The view of the Freiburg and the minster from here is just breathtaking.
To reach Schlossberg Hill, you can either hike up or ride the Schlossbergbahn funicular. A return ticket in the funicular costs only 6 euros per person.
6. EXPLORE THE UNIVERSITY QUARTER
Freiburg is home to Albert Ludwig University, one of Germany’s oldest universities. It’s presence gives the city a youthful energy. Wander through the university library and the surrounding cafés, where students gather to study and socialize.
