WHY IS THE BLACK FOREST CALLED THE BLACK FOREST?
Why is the Black Forest called the Black Forest if it isn’t black? The name of Black Forest comes from the translation of the German word Schwarzwald into English. There are two different theories for its origin.
- The first theory is that the name Black Forest comes from the forests in this area which are so dense and full of pines that they light becomes really dark, almost pitch-black.
- The second theory dates from the Roman times. It is said that roman soldiers called this area “Populus Nigra” because walking these trails were so dark.
PLAN A TRIP TO THE BLACK FOREST IN 12 SIMPLE STEPS
1. THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING TO PLAN YOUR TRIP
Before you plan or do anything, here are some general things that your should know about this region.
- The Black Forest is located in the southwest part of Germany. It right at the border with France on the western side and with Switzerland on the south. For this reason, many travelers combine their trip to the Black Forest with Alsace (France) or with the Rhine Waterfalls (Switzerland).
- There is a big French influence in the area, especially in its gastronomy.
- The Black Forest is very popular in December due to the famous German Christmas Markets. However, you should know that this time of the year is also the most expensive time to visit.
- The best way to explore the Black Forest is by car.
- Most towns in the region are super cute with their half-timbered houses. However, if you are limited on time, you should not miss Schiltach and Gengenbach.
2. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO VISIT THE BLACK FOREST?
The answer to this question will depend on what sort of traveler you are, and what you like to do. Do you like visiting at a fast pace or in a more relaxed way? Do you like hiking or just visiting a few viewpoints next to the parking lot?
I would say, at a minimun you need 3 full days to visit the Black Forest but if you want to take things at a calmer pace, I would recommend 4 or even 5 days.
In our case, we tend to prioritize slow travel and so we did a 4 day road trip. In this time, we managed to visit a few charming towns and enjoy several short hikes.
3. BUDGET: HOW EXPENSIVE IS THE BLACK FOREST?
I’m not going to lie, this region is not particularly cheap but, in general, prices vary a lot depending on the time of the year you want to visit. Prices are particularly high during the summer and Christmas time.
If you’re planning a trip to the Black Forest, the best advice I can give you is that you plan your trip well in advance. This will help you find better deals and save some money. However, there are few tips that can help you save some money.
- Instead of staying at hotels, you can rent some appartments and cook some of your meals. Don’t get me wrong, I love trying out the local cuisine whenever I’m on a trip but eating at a restaurant three times per day adds up very quickly.
- Drive your own car, instead of flying and renting a car. I know this is not possible for everyone but if you live in central Europe like us, this can be a good way to save money.
4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE BLACK FOREST?
The answer to this question will also depend on what kind of holiday you are looking for. The Black Forest is beautiful year-round.
- Spring
: Meadows are lush and green, wildflowers start popping, and it’s quieter before the summer crowds. It is a great moment for hiking and cycling.
- Summer
: Warm, sunny, and lovely. It is the perfect moment for long hikes, lake swims, and outdoor festivals. This is the most popular (and busiest) season.
- Autumn
: A gorgeous time with golden forests, grape harvest in nearby regions and fewer visitors. A sweet moment for hiking.
- Winter
: Ideal if you’re looking for Christmas markets and a cozy atmosphere. Towns like Triberg and Baden-Baden feel particularly magical in this season.
5. FLIGHTS
If you’re getting to the Black Forest by plane, you should know that there are three different airports that you can fly to: Strasbourg Airport (SXB), Euro Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL/MLH/EAP), and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB). Depending on your airport of departure, it can be better to fly to a different airport. This is particularly important if you want to get a good price.
The best advice I can give you is to compare which option is better for you before you buy anything. I always check for the best prices and dates with Kiwi.com.
6. TRAVEL INSURANCE
If there is something that I have learned in 2025 is that Travel Insurance is something completely necessary. In fact, during my Black Forest trip, I had to make a visit to the hospital since I got bitten by a tick. In this case, it was just a minimal and luckily the tick that bit me was not a carrier of Lyme disease. But trust me, if you ever fall sick during a trip, you will be so happy you have a good travel insurance that has you covered.
If you are from Europe, you can always use the European Health Card but many people don’t know that this card, doesn’t necessary cover 100% of your medical expenses. The European Health Card only entitles you to the same medical access as the residents of the country you are visiting. Therefore, if you are visiting a country in which health treatment is not 100% free, you might have to pay some expenses.
In addition, a travel insurance can also offer you travel cancelation coverage. You never know if you might have to cancel your travel for any unplanned reasons.
Trust me, as soon as you buy your flights, the next step should always be getting a Travel Insurance.
7. TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION
Do you need a Visa to enter the country?
If you’re traveling to Germany from any country of the European Union, the only thing that you’ll need is to have a valid National ID Card with you. Thanks to the Schengen Agreement, people within the European Union can move freely between countries. You don’t need to bring your passport with you.
However, if you’re from outside the European Union, you will definitely have to bring your passport and check what are the specific requirements to enter Germany. You can check what are the requirements depending on your nationality here.
Driving License
If you’re planning on renting a car, you’ll need to have your Driving License with you. Every car rental company is going to ask for it when you pick up your car. I know, this is quite obvious for everyone but it can be so easy to just forget it at home.
8. RENT A CAR
The best way to visit the Black Forest is, without any doubt, by car. The Black Forest is full of sites, small towns and castles that are all scattered along the region. If you want to visit the area in a comfortable way and without having to worry about public transport schedules, then you absolutely need to have a car.
In our case, we drove directly from Belgium with our car but I know this is not always possible. If you’re considering renting a car, I recommend you use Rentalcars. I always use it if I need to rent a car during my trip and has always worked really well.
Tips for renting a car in the Black Forest
Here are some tips that you have to take into consideration when renting a car for the Black Forest.
- Be very aware of which country you are flying to. Some rental car companies do not allow you to cross any border or have some extra fees if you want to do so.
- Always compare different rental car companies before you book anything. This is the reason why I always use Rentalcars. It is the best way to find the cheapest rental car as it offers a search engine with many different companies.
- When renting a car, most rental companies will ask you to provide a credit card number that they can register as a guarantee for any car damages.
- If you’re visiting the Black Forest during the winter months, your car will need to have winter tires. If you’re renting a car in Germany, then the car will most probably be equiped with them since they are mandatory. However, if you’re renting your canr in Switzerland or France, this might not be the case.
9. ACCOMMODATION IN THE BLACK FOREST
Before booking any accommodation, you need to decide whether you want to set base throughout your trip in a specific place and drive from there every day, or if you prefer sleeping everyday in a different place based on where you are visiting. This preference really depends on the person and the type of travel they like.
In our case, we decided to move around and change hotels every day, so we booked our hotels based on what we had planned to visit each day. We wanted to reduce driving times as much as possible and enjoy the area in more relaxed way.
No matter which travel style you choose, we always book our accommodation with Booking. You can compare hotels based on prices and location and always choose the one that suits you better. In addition, many hotels offer free cancelation until just a few days before your arrival so this allows you to stay flexible, in case your travel plans were to change last-minute.
10. CREATE YOUR ITINERARY
There are so many different possible itineraries on the Black Forest. It all depends on what kind of traveler you are and what you like to see and do. It also depends on how much time you have…. There is only one thing that is for sure, you will have to make some choices because nobody has infinite vacation days.
If you want some inspiration, you can always check our 4 day itinerary in the Black Forest. If you are a regular in this blog, you will know that we love hiking and being outdoors so we always give preference to hiking and nature.

11. PACKING FOR THE BLACK FOREST
You’re almost set to leave for your dream trip in the Black Forest, but you are probably wandering, what should I pack? Well, again it all depends on what you are planning to do. However, no matter the type of traveler you are, I would recommend that at a minimum, you bring these:
- Light rain jacket or umbrella. Weather can always change so being prepared for some rain doesn’t hurt.
- Dress in layers, this way you can adapt easily to the weather you have.
- Comfortable walking shoes, you will be walking a lot. If you’re planning on hiking, sturdy hiking shoes are also very important.
- Warm clothes, if you’re planning to visit during the winter months.
12. WHAT TO EAT IN THE BLACK FOREST?
One of the best things to do when visiting a country is to try its gastronomy, and if you’re planning a trip to the Black Forest, then you’re in for a treat! Here are some must-try dishes.
- Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake). Layer of chocolate sponge, whipped cream, cherries, and a splash of kirsch (cherry brandy). This is the region’s most famous dessert!
- Schwarzwälder Schinken (Black Forest ham). Smoked over pinewood and juniper, thinly sliced and usually served with bread or cheese.
- Maultaschen. These are giant German ravioli, filled with minced meat, spinach, and onions. Comfort food at its best.
- Venison or wild boar dishes. Game is big in the region, often paired with rich sauces, mushrooms, and spatzle.
- Spätzle. Soft egg noodles, often served with gravy or melted cheese.
- Kirschwasser. A clear cherry brandy made in the region.
