Getting to Bolzano by Car
There are different possibilities to reach Bolzano, but the most convenient one is definitely by car, especially if you are planning to do a road trip around the Dolomites. Here are the driving times depending on where you are driving from.
- From Innsbruck. Bolzano is just located an hour away from Innsbruck.
- From Venice. Venice is located approximately 3 hours away by car from Bolzano.
Getting to Bolzano by Plane
Bolzano also has a small airport (Bolzano Airport) that connects the city with several cities in Italy and a few other cities in Europe such as Berlin, London, or Palma de Mallorca. The airport is not too big, but depending on where you are flying from, you might have a direct flight to Bolzano.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BOLZANO?
Bolzano can be visited all year round but your activities will vary depending on the season. If you visit during the winter months, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to combine your visit to the city with some sky in the Dolomites.
Alternatively, you can visit during the late spring and summer months to enjoy hiking around the Dolomites. We visited in August and had the most fantastic time there.
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT BOLZANO?
If you just want to visit the highlights of Bolzano, you’ll need half a day. However, staying longer allows for a more relaxed visit. One full day is ideal to explore the historic center, visit the archeological museum, and enjoy local food.
If you have two days, you can add a day trip to the Dolomites. You can visit the breathtaking Lago di Carezza or the nearby Val di Funes.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN BOLZANO
Bolzano offers a mix of scenic walks, historic landmarks, and easy access to the surrounding mountains. The city is compact which means you can combien several of these activities in one day.
1. EXPLORE THE HISTORIC CITY CENTER
The historic center of Bolzano is easy to explore on foot. Narrow streets, colorful buildings, and traditional arcades create a charming atmosphere. Walking around is one of the best wasy to experience the city.
You will also find cafés, small shops, and local markets throughout the area. Take your time to wander without a fixed plan. This where you really get a feel for Bolzano’s unique cultural mix.
2. VISIT PIAZZA WALTHER
Piazza Walther is the main square and the heart of the city. Surrounded by elegant buildings, it is a lively meeting place. Cafés line the square and provide a great spot to relax.
Throughout the year, events and markets take place here. In winter, the square hoste the famous Bolzano Christmas market. It is a central point you will likely pass several times during your visit.
3. VISIT THE CATHEDRAL OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY
The Bolzano Cathedral is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. It’s colorful tiled roof and Gothic tower stand out in the skyline. The cathedral dates back to the the 14th century.
Inside, the cathedral offers a peaceful atmosphere. The interior is relatively simple compared to larger Italian cathedrals, but the simplicity adds to its charm. It is worth taking a few minutes to walk through and appreciate the craftsmanship and quiet setting.

- Opening hours. It is open daily between 8:00 and 18:00.
4. WALK ALONG VIA DEI PORTICI
Via dei Portici is one of the most visited streets in Bolzano. This shopping street with its Gothic arcades connects Piazza delle Erbe with Piazza del Municipio.
These Portici or arcades have always been important for Bolzano’s commerce. They were built in the 12th century and commercial activities would take place under these façades, with the stock being preserved in the building behind them serving as a warehouse.
Today, Via dei Portici is still a busy shopping street: under the round arches are numerous shops, from historic shops to large chains.
5. VISIT THE SOUTH TYROL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is one of the main attractions in Bolzano. The museum is best known for housing Ötzi the Iceman, a naturally preserved mummy discovered in the nearby Alps. The exhibition explains how he lived and how he was found.
The museum is modern and well organized, making it easy to visit even if you are short on time. Displays include cothing, tools, and information about life in prehistoric alpine regions. It is a fascinating stop that adds historical context to your visit.

- Opening hours. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00.
6. VISIT CHIESA DEI DOMINICANI
The Dominican Church is one of the oldest churches in Bolzano. Built in the 13th century, it features Gothic architecture and a simple but elegant interior. The highlight of this church is the Chapel of St. John, where you can admire one of the mosut beautiful frescoes of the city that belong to the Giottos’s art school (14th century).

- Price. The church can be visited for free.
- Opening hours. The Dominican Church is open daily between 7:00 and 19:00.
7. CROSS TALVERA BRIDGE AND VISIT THE VICTORY MONUMENT
Not far from the Archaeological museum, you will find Talvera river that flows through Bolzano. Crossing the river, you will find Talvera Bridge that leads you to the Victory Monument (Monumento alla Vittoria). This is a triunfal arched gate built in 1928 to conmemorate the annexation of South Tyrol to Italy after World War I.
For a long time, it was a symbol of division between the Italian and German-speaking communities in Bolzano but it has recently been transformed into a peace and documentation center to explain the city’s complex history under both Fascism and Nazism.
8. VISIT MARECCIO castle AND DO A WINE TASTING
Mareccio Castle is a beautiful medieval castle surrounded by extensive vineyards. The castle is located just outside Bolzano’s historic center and next to Talvera River.
The castle is mainly used as an event side, so it is not always possible to visit its interior. However, walking through its vineyards is a beautiful experience. Additionally, if you visit during Bolzano’s Wine Festival, you can taste some the region’s best wines.
9. GO FOR A WALK ALONG PASSEGGIATA DEL GUNCINA
The Passeggiata del Guncina is one of the most scenic walking routes in Bolzano. This peaceful promenade climbs gently above the city and offers beautiful views of the rooftops, vineyeards, and surrounding mountains. The path is well maintained and lined with trees, making it an enjoyable walk throughout most of the year.
Along the route, you will find benches and viewpoints where you can stop and take in the scenery.
10. STROLL ALONG PASSEGGIATA DI SANT'OSVALDO
The Passeggiata di Sant’Osvaldo is another beautiful hillside walk that offers panoramic views over the city. The trail runs through a quiet residential area and wooded sections.
One of the highlights along this route is Cornice su Bolzano, a viewpoint overlooking the city and surrounding mountains. From here, you get a wide perspective of the valley and vineyards below.
11. VISIT RONCOLO CASTEL AND NOVALE CASTLE
Just outside the city center, Castel Roncolo is one of the most interesting historical sites in the area. The castle sits on a rocky outcrop above the Talvera River and is known for its impressive medieval frescoes. These paintings depict scenes of knights, courtly life, and medieval traditions.
Nearby, you can also see Castel Novale. Although smaller, it adds to the historic atmosphere of the area. Visiting both castles can easily be combined with a scenic walk along the river.

- Opening hours. Castle Roncolo is open from Tuesday until Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00.
12. VISIT THE BEAUTIFUL LAGO DI CAREZZA
Lago di Carezza is one of the most scenic lakes near Bolzano. Known for its turquoise water, it sits below dramatic Latemar mountain peaks.
A short circular path runs around the lake and offers several viewpoints. The walk is easy and suitable for all visitors. It is the perfect half day trip from Bolzano.
WHERE TO STAY IN BOLZANO?
Looking for a place to stay in Bolzano? We stayed at Hotel Hanny for a night and we were quite happy with our choice. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Bolzano but area is really calm. We basically chose this hotel for its parking since we were traveling by car.
The rooms, though simple, were very comfortable and we had some nice views of the surrounding vineyards from our room. The staff was really friendly and allowed us to check in early, and the breakfast buffet was delicious.
