During my trip to the Dolomites, Santa Magdalena (Santa Maddalena in Italian) was one of the beautiful sites we visited. Unlike some of the region’s more demanding hikes, reaching this famous viewpoint requires only a short walk, making it accessible to almost every traveler.

WHY IS SANTA MAGDALENA ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SPOTS IN THE DOLOMITES?

There are countless beautiful places in the Dolomites, but Santa Magdalena has a way of stopping you in your tracks. The combination of rolling green meadows, traditional alpine farms, the tiny church perched on the hillside, and the jagged peaks of the Odle mountains creates a scene that feels almost unreal.

While social media has certainly contributed to its popularity, seeing hte landscape in person is something entirely different. No phot quite captures the scale of the mountains or the peaceful atmosphere of Val di Funes.

IS THIS VIEWPOINT WORTH VISITING?

Absolutely!

While it can get busy during peak season, arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon makes all the difference. We were there in the late afternoon and there was only a few other groups of people there.

HOW TO GET TO SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT?

Driving to Santa Magdalena

The easiest way to visit Santa Magdalena viewpoint is by car. The village of Santa Maddalena is located in Val di Funes, approximately 45 minutes from Bolzano and around one hour from Ortisei. The roads leading into the valley are paved and are well-maintained, although they become narrower as you approach the village.

Parking: There are several parking areas near the start of the Panorama Trail, which leaves to the famous viewpoint. The most convenient option is the parking located just outside the village center. However, this parking is relatively small, so you might have to wait a bit until a spot clears out. You’ll have to pay a small parking fee through a parkimeter. This only accepts cash or alternatively, you’ll have to use the Easypark app.

Visiting Santa Magdalena by public transport

Although having a car offers the most flexibility, it is possible to reach Santa Maddalena using public transportation.

Bus 330, departing from Bresanonna, drives along Val di Funes making several stops in the valley. The journey takes longer than driving, but it is still a feasible option for travelers exploring the Dolomites without a rental car.

Important: Always check the latest bus schedules before departing to ensure you will have a return bus to your accommodation.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?

Santa Magdalena is beautiful throughout the year, but the experience changes dramatically depending on when you visit. The best season ultimately depends on what you’re hoping to see and photograph.

I would recommend visiting this beautiful place either earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. Not only, it will be less crowded, but you will also get softer light conditions for photography.

IMPORTANT TIPS TO VISIT SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT

Santa Magdalena may be easy to visit, but a few simple tips can help ensure you have the best possible experience while respecting this beautiful corner of the Dolomites.

Respect private property. This is perhaps the most important thing to remember. Many of the farmlands in front of the viewpoint are privately owned. Please stay on marked paths, and avoid climbing fences.
Bring cash for parking. The parking areas mostly run with parkimeters that only accept cash.
Check the weather forecast. Even though Santa Magdalena doesn’t involve a major hike, low clouds or heavy rain can completely obscure the famous mountain backdrop.

WALKING TO SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT

Distance – 5.1 km

Elevation Gain – 210 m

Route Type – Out & Back

Estimated Time Needed – 1 hour and 30 minutes (including plenty of time to stop for photos and enjoy the views)

Best Time To Visit – June to September to ensure the best weather conditions.

I always use the AllTrails App during my hikes. The app has a GPX map that can help you stay on the right trail during your hikes. For this hike, we followed the Viewpoint Santa Magadalena Trail since we didn’t have a lot of time. If you have some extra time, youcan do the complete Santa Magdalena Panorama Trail.

MY EXPERIENCE VISITING SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT

Getting to the Santa Maddalena church

As soon as we parked our car, we started walking through the small village towards the church. The trail was very well marked with plenty of signs guiding you to the panoramic viewpoint.

Soon enough, you leave the houses behind and start going up (there are a few switch backs) in between farms. Not very long afterwards, you reach the Santa Magdalena church which you can visit inside and cool down a little bit (if you happen to visit on a warm summer day like we did).

Reaching the famous viewpoint

From the church, we continued hiking uphill until we reach the famous viewpoint. The hike was not too strenous but if we stop a few times to rest since we had already hiked a longer and demanding hike that day. We took the advantage of these stops to turn around to enjoy the views. The views on the Odle mountains are amazing as soon as you start gaining some altitude!

After approximately 20 minutes, we reached the famous Santa Magdalena Viewpoint. There was some other people there but it wasn’t as crowded as I thought it would be. The bench were you can sit down and admire the views was already taken but we found a little spot of grass where we sat down and relaxed for a little while.

Important: This meadows are private property. Be respectful of them and if they are limited with cords, do not go inside them to take photos.

The return to the parking lot

We sat and relaxed for 20 minutes while enjoying the views before starting walking back. The hike back down was quite easy, it is mostly downhill and before we knew it, we were back at the car.

OTHER THINGS TO DO NEAR SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT

Looking for other things to do near Santa Magdalena? Here are some options depending on how much time you have.

Church of San Giovanni. Just outside of Santa Magdalena village, you’ll find another beautiful church with the Odle mountains in the background.
Hike to Rifugio delle Odle. If you have half a day, consider adding a hike to Rifugio delle Odle. One of the most impressive views in Val de Funes.

WHERE TO STAY IN SANTA MAGDALENA?

During our trip to the Dolomites we set base in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena and drove from there to Val di Funes. However, this meant we had to drive almost 1 hour to get to Santa Magdalena and 1 hour to return. If you want to avoid this amount of driving, I suggest you book an accommodation in Val di Funes. Here are some recommendations that I would choose for myself.

Oberkantiolhof

Oberkantiolhof is a hidden gem in Val di Funes. It offers comfortable rooms and a spa & wellness center where you can relax after a day of hiking and exploring this beautiful region.

Raschotzhof is another good accommodation located in San Pietro, a bit further in Val di Funes. The rooms are comfortable and have great views of the Odle peaks.

IS SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT FREE?

Yes, visiting Santa Magalena Viewpoint is completely free. However, you’ll need to pay for parking if you are arriving by car.

HOW LONG DO YOU NEED TO VISIT SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT?

We were there for an hour and a half, but we didn’t do the complete Panorama Trail. If you want to complete the Panorama Trail I would schedule an extra hour.

IS IT AN EASY WALK?

Yes. Reaching the viewpoint is suitable for almost all fitness levels.

CAN YOU VISIT SANTA MAGDALENA VIEWPOINT YEAR ROUND?

Absolutely! This viewpoint is beautiful and accessible in every season.
