WHY SHOULD YOU HIKE TO LAGO DI LIMIDES?
The Hike to Lago di Limides (also known as Lago Limides or Lago Limedes) is one of the best short hikes in the Dolomites. In less than an hours, you can reach a beautiful alpine lake with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. If you’re looking for a hike that doesn’t require much effort but still offers incredible scenery, this is an excellent choice.
One of the highlights of this hike is the peaceful setting. Lago Limides sits below the towering peaks of Lagazuoi and Tofana, creating a picture-perfect landscape. On calm days, the mountains are reflected in the clear water, making it a fantastic spot for photography. Since the hike is relatively short, you’ll also have plenty of time to sit by the lake and enjoy the views.
Another reason to hike to Lago Limides is its covenient location. The trail starts at Passo Falzarego, one of the most scenic mountain passes in the Dolomites. It’s easy to combine this thike with other nearby attractions, such as the Lagazuoi Cable Car, Cinque Torri, or a visit to one of the local mountain huts (rifugios).
Trust me! Lago di Limides is a worthwhile stop.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE HIKE
HOW TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD?
The Lago Limides Hike starts at Passo Falzarego. This makes it a very convenient hike to add to your itineray, especially if you are exploring other nearby hikes like Cinque Torri.
To reach the trailhead, from Cortina d’Ampezzo follow the directions towards Passo Falzarego. The starting point is located near the parking lot next to Ristorante “da Strobel”, close to the Lagazuoi cable car station. From here, you can easily find the beginning of the Lago Limides trail.
Parking: The parking lot next to the restaurant is quite big but it does tend to fill up fast during the summer months. If you find this parking lot full, you can drive a bit further until the Lagazuoi cable car station where you will find another parking lot.
If you do not have a car, you can also reach Passo Falzarego by public transport during the summer months. However, driving is the easiest option.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED TO HIKE TO LAGO DI LIMIDES?
The trail is short and easy, so you don’t need to bring much. This is one of the reasons why I consider it one of the best easy hikes in the Dolomites. It can be completed in a short time, and you can enjoy the scenery without carrying a heavy backpack.
The most important thing to bring is a good pair of hiking shoes. Even though the trail is not difficult, some sections can be uneven, and a good grip will make the walk safer and more comfortable.
I also recommend bringing water and some snacks. Lago di Limides is a beautiful place to stop and enjoy a picnic while admiring the surrounding mountains. A small backpack with the basics is enough for this short adventure.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HIKE TO LAGO LIMEDES?
Summer is the best season to visit Lago di Limides because the trail is usually free of snow and the weather conditions are more stable. However, this also means it is the busiest time of the year.
To enjoy this beautiful spot at its best, I would hike either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. These times of the day offer the best light for photography and a more peaceful atmosphere.
We visited this lake at around 18:00 and there were only a two more couples here so it was really special.

We parked our car at the parking lot and immediately started hiking to the lake. The hike begins next to a ski slope and you can see the chair lift on your right. Soon enough, you will turn left and enter a shaded forestfirst part of the hike is throug a forest with a moderate uphill.

Forested area
After 500 meters, you will exit the forested area and start walking on a wide open field, with Mount Nuvolau in front of you. The trail continues to go uphill but it is very manageable. As you will, you will encounter some signs guiding you towards the lake so it is impossible to get lost.

This trail is so short that after another 500 meters, you will go up a small hill, and you will reach the lake.
Relaxing at Lago Limedes
Once at the lake, you can either walk around it, or find a nice spot to relax and admire the views. If you don’t want to fully go around the lake, I recommend that you at least walk to the far end to get to enjoy the views from different angles.
We found a nice spot and relaxed for a while. It was really peaceful and the views were unbeatable!

OTHER THINGS TO DO NEARBY
Looking for other things to do near Lago Limides? Don’t worry, this hike is located next to some other amazing sites in the Dolomites.
Cinque Torri and the WWI open-air museum. Just a few hundred meters away by car you can take a chair lift and and visit the beautiful Cinque Torri, which are another super famous site in the Dolomites.
Rifugio Averau and Nuvolau. Starting from the same place as the Cinque Torri, you can also go on a hike up to Rifugio Nuvolau, one of the most impressive rifugios in the Dolomites.
Hike through the Lagazuoi Tunnels. Another great option is to take the Lagazuoi cable car and descend hiking through the tunnels that were carved during WWI.

WHERE TO STAY NEAR LAGO LIMIDES?
Lago Limides is located near Cortina d’Ampezzo, so the most ideal place to look for your accommodation would be this town. However, prices are a bit high in Cortina, so if you’re traveling on a lower budget or you just want to save some money, then I would recommend looking for accommodation just outside Cortina.
Hotel Al Sasso di Stria
Hotel Al Sasso di Stria offers family rooms with private bathrooms and is conveniently located in the Falzarego Pass. You will only have to drive a few minutes down the road to reach the trailhead.
Hotel Croda Rossa is a charming hotel with a great location. The hotel is located on a beautiful valley with great views of Monte Cristallo. Rooms were spacious and comfortable. The garden is perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking in the Dolomites.
We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights and had a fantastic day here. The only downside to this hotel was the food which was not very good. We solved it by having dinner either at Cortina or Dobbiaco.
The Lago Limides Hike is approximately 2 km round trip. Most people complete it in 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how long they spend enjoying the views at the lake.
IS THE LAGO LIMIDES HIKE DIFFICULT?
No. This is an easy hike suitable for most people. The trail is short and well-marked, although some sections are rocky.

Absolutely. We hiked this trail the same day we hiked up to Cinque Torri and Rifugio Nuvolau.
